Newcomer Play Program & Parenting Group
Welcoming and integrating newcomers to Lethbridge involves more than just LFS—it takes our whole community. For the past few years, our friends at Family Centre in Lethbridge have provided space for newcomer families to participate in a Play Program in the Melcor Playroom. Here, clients can socialize and build rapport with Family Centre staff and LFS Settlement Practitioners.
At the same time, newcomer parents can attend the Parenting Program. These group sessions provide a space to meet other parents, discuss important information, and have questions answered about parenting in Canada. Topics include schooling, nutrition, hygiene, health, and everything in between. From this group, one-on-one referrals are made for any parent who might require more assistance. Sessions for both Play Mornings and Parenting Program are offered in spring and fall, accommodating 6-8 families at a time.
Local newcomer families have benefited greatly from these weekly sessions. A big thank you to Family Centre in Lethbridge and the program funder, United Way of Lethbridge & South Western Alberta, for helping ensure newcomer parents and their children thrive in Lethbridge. Special thanks as well to the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences and the bright nursing students who help facilitate educational presentations for parents.💙
